No Lye Relaxer System 9 Application
Clio Silkit™ no lye relaxers, with calcium hydroxide, will include an activator step-or a separate component to be mixed into the relaxer cream. No-lye relaxers use a product with a higher pH to change the shape of the hair strands by breaking the disulfide bonds that hold the protein brills. While the pH of lye relaxers is typically in the 12-14 range, no-lye relaxers have a pH of about 9-9.5, and usually use calcium hydroxide to straighten the hair. Although the pH is lower with no-lye relaxers (making them "milder"), these formulas still apply unnaturally high bases to hair. While no-lye is frequently described as gentler, be mindful that these formulas still contain hydroxide, just as the lye formulas do.
Hydroxide action takes out curl, but also eliminates some of the natural strength and elasticity of hair.
Everyone's hair is different, and for some, no-lye relaxers actually make hair drier and duller than lye formulas. A no-lye formula should never be left on hair longer than absolutely necessary.
Chemical hair relaxers change the basic structure of the hair shaft. The chemical dissolves and penetrates the outer shell covering the hair, called the cortex or cortical layer. It breaks the internal bonds of the hair shaft. This stripping away of the outer layer of the hair shaft and breaking of the bonds weakens the hair.
Once this process is performed, it is irreversible. Chemical hair straighteners are very harsh, and they can burn the scalp or the skin. It is also very easy to “over process” already relaxed hair. This over processing usually results in hair breaking. For this reason, chemical hair relaxers should be reapplied (only to new hair growth) after about 8 weeks. Cases of chemical hair relaxer being ingested by small children have resulted in severe burns to the esophagus, mouth and face. For this reason, chemical hair straighteners should never be used on small children. Children should be teens before applying any kind of permanent hair relaxer because they are still growing, and their hormones have not finished determining what their ultimate hair type will be.
